Today the constitutional council annouced the official candidates for the 2007 presidential elections in France: 12 in total (down from 16 in 2002)
In alphabetical order:
- François Bayrou Union pour la Démocratie Française (Centrists, rather Right)
- Olivier Besancenot Ligue Communiste Révollutionnaire (Marxist, rather Trotskyist)
- José Bové (Syndicalist, Alterglobalization)
- Marie-George Buffet Parti Communiste Français (Communists)
- Frédéric Nihous Chaisse Pêche Nature et Tradition (Right, preserving the traditional rural values)
- Jean-Marie Le Pen Front National (Far Right, Nationalist)
- Arlette Laguiller Lutte Ouvrière (Communist, Trotskyist)
- Ségolène Royal Parti Socialiste (Social democratic)
- Gérard Schivardi Parti des Travailleurs (Trotskyist)
- Nicolas Sarkozy Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (Mainstream Right)
- Philippe de Villiers Mouvement Pour la France (Far Right, Nationalist)
- Dominique Voynet Les Verts (Ecologists)
Which gives us:
- 5 on the right, 7 on the left
- 4 Women (all of whom are on Left)
